Artist Statement

I am a 48-year-old indigenous Mexican artist with a black grandfather. My art reflects my heritage. I like to create pieces that center black and Mexican women surrounded by symbols and animals that are important to our culture. I’m a mixed media artist that uses colored cardstock which I then decorate with markers paint and colored pencils to create a unique image. Each piece is individually cut out and glued to the canvas creating
somewhat of a 3d effect. My Hope is to celebrate the strength beauty and resilience of women and I hope that when they see my work they will see the Divine femininity that exists in each and every one of us. I was a hairdresser for 20 years and became chronically ill 8 years ago. 2 years ago I watched Frida kahlo documentary and was inspired by her continuing to make art even when she was in great pain and bedridden. This symbol
didn’t need to start creating my own art from my bed and has given new meaning to my life.
