Artist Statement

I am a fiber and ceramic artist from the Pacific Northwest. I am pursuing my MFA at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in Fiber and Material Studies. My art grapples with longing using the narrative ability of materials. I work with scraps because the qualities and narratives of each fiber inform both the shape and feeling of each piece. I use the tactile nature of ceramics to create solid forms through spontaneous sculpting. By combining the fluidity of clay and the softness of fibers, I translate inexpressible feelings into tangible assemblages. My work blurs the hard and soft by exploring the sculptural potential of fibers. I am currently developing a series of landscapes that are dreamlike images of where I remember feeling at “home”. Each landscape grows from my textural memories of each place. This series has challenged me to explore what I am trying to reach in
reimagining these memories. I am searching for the sense of home that only exists in my memory.
