Artist Statement

I work in the multifaceted and often contradictory emotions that define intimacy in many forms. I use bold colors and expressive brushstrokes to reveal the emotions intrinsic to the human condition through my pieces. My subject matter is drawn from the world around me and I am captivated by compositions that convey a story or a feeling that resonates deeper, reflecting the beauty, complexity, and sometimes the stark realities of the human experience.
My fascination lies in the rawness of the human experience, the truths we often hide from the world. My compositions are meant to be relatable and soothing as I seek to capture and share this authenticity, this unfiltered emotionality, through my work.
In terms of technique, I am an acrylic artist who uses modern technology as my sketchbook. This allows me to explore and refine my ideas before committing them to canvas. By blending traditional and contemporary methods, I create unique, thought-provoking pieces that invite viewers to explore the depths of their own emotions and connections.
Through my art, I invite you to experience the raw, unspoken truths of being human.

Artist Biography

Leigh Witherell is a contemporary figurative artist who lives full-time in Florida. While her first interest in art ignited during university, it was not until a seismic life event, the death of her daughter in April 2021,that she fully committed to her artistic journey. She holds a BA and an MA in Literature, along with a minor in Fine Art which polished her natural talent through academic rigor.
What sets her work apart is the integration of real-life emotions into her art. Each figure has a story to tell,and each canvas will speak differently to each observer. She asserts that it is not her desire to make others see the world as she sees it, but instead to let her canvases take on a life of their own, thereby allowing the observer to ponder how what they are seeing integrates into their life view.
Witherell’s art aims to spark essential societal conversations, intertwining her beliefs with her creations.Recognized in numerous magazines and Podcast interviews for her strong, emotional, and provocative work, she is hailed as an artist of immense substance and depth, destined to leave a lasting impact on the contemporary art scene.
