Artist Statement

Attempts to understand the mind are universal yet it remains a mystery. As a neuroscientist with 30+ years of experience, I have probably forgotten more than most people will ever know about the functioning of the human brain and yet I am no closer to unravelling the mystery. The concept of the Fallen Angel originally referred to angels expelled from heaven. More modern usage denotes a person who has suffered a loss of status and value. Pain and physical loss entered my life unexpectedly and I entered a psychological and spiritual black hole.
This sculpture reflects the angst and darkness that accompanies pain-a sensation common to all of us yet experienced individually and alone.
