This painting was originally displayed in the Mint Museum homage to Romare Beardon Exhibit. It depicts the transition of a charming historic house in a marginal area of Charleston renovated into a Law Office, which was eventually absorbed again by the strife of the area and abandoned. The painting style is a realist montage of the house image with collage elements crating an abstract quality. The house both solidifies with bright colors highlighting important elements then bleeds away with transparency as the dream disappears.

Artist StatementMy paintings tend to convey my passion with natural beauty through saturated and translucent watercolors and subjects focused on social dilemmas such as the climate crisis, inequality and ageism. These images create a pathos of compassion, joy, and somber contemplation in the viewer using the medium of watercolor which allows both strength and vulnerability to be shown together. I paint with expressive gestures from the heart based on observation, global experience, and ceaseless optimism in a voice that took many years to come forward. |
Artist BiographyI am a Canadian who immigrated to the Southern States after first displaying artwork in local shows then doing commissioned work while getting a B.E.D. from Miami U. with studies at Cornel, and an M. Architecture at Yale. I first set up my architectural practice in Vancouver,BC, then moved it to Toronto and finally Charlotte, NC. Spencer Architect designs sustainable projects while I also teach environmental systems at Harvard after getting a Masters in Sustainability there. I was a single mother and once my 4 children were off to college I resumed painting, entering and winning places in International competitions and the Holbein Award. |
