Artist Statement

“Home Sweet Home” is the feeling of a friend’s place in North Carolina, the home she created with her late husband — a thoughtfully curated collection of antiques, leather, books, brick, dogs, music, memories, & love. It’s the warmth I felt when I walked through the front door, & the wonder that grew with every corner I turned, every detail I noticed. I spent 20+ years as an opera singer, & this couple were my most beloved voice teachers. This was my first visit to their NC home, & it was gutting that he wasn’t there. Except that he was, in every inch of that house. The magic I’d felt in their NY home was present in NC, too. They were the magic. “Becoming” (NFS) was my first commission. It’s where I found my voice, after the end of my singing career. The sweeping gestures reminded me of singing Puccini & Verdi.I painted “I Am Not Left Handed” (NFS) 2 days after I had breast cancer surgery, my dominant hand sidelined for recovery, to remind myself.
