Artist Statement
My work is an investigation into the vibrancy of life, using the interplay of light and shadow as a primary language. Whether I am painting the human form, an interior sanctuary, or the vast Pacific Northwest landscape, I look for the “vitality” that exists in the tension between a subject and its atmosphere. Heavily influenced by the Impressionist focus on light and the West Coast’s saturated palettes, I use a thick, gestural application of oil paint to create a tactile presence on the canvas. My goal is not merely to mirror reality, but to translate the sensory experience of a moment – a facial expression that captures personality, the warmth of a home or the reflection of a sunset on the ocean-into a lasting emotional connection.
