Artist Statement

These photographs were made on the lakes of western Maine using intentional camera movement, a technique that trades sharpness for something harder to name. The world does not resolve. What remains is not quite the thing itself, but the feeling of it: recognizable, present, but already leaving.
I made them in the aftermath of a significant loss. Not as documentation of grief, but as an attempt to understand what grief looks like when you try to see it clearly. What is lost has this quality. You can almost see it. The shape is there. The light is there. But something essential has already gone, and no amount of looking brings it back into focus.
