Artist Statement

I paint from life, but I’m less interested in reproducing what I see than in discovering what else might be there.
A figure, a horizon, a moment at the beach-these are often my starting points. From there, I use color, movement, texture, and expressive mark-making to push beyond the literal. I’m interested in the point where a recognizable subject begins to loosen, where observation gives way to interpretation, and the painting starts to develop a life of its own.
